Byrd ATC by applescruff Byrd ATC by applescruff
I had a betta for eight years. He died not too long ago and I was deeply upset. I decided to paint in his honor. It took me a while, and I kept setting it aside, but now I've got something done. He's not exactly right. As he aged, he got darker, and there was at least one point when his dorsal fin got some really bright blue in it that I didn't quite get right, but it is close and I am happy with it. A tribute to a friend.

It's a beautiful tribute. He looks very elegant. I'm sorry you lost a friend; losing a pet hurts no matter how big or small they are :C

I didn't realize posting this and getting responses on here and Tumblr would give me feels about him all over again. I thought I was ready, because he was having such a hard time of it for that last month or so, it was almost a relief that it was over for him, but also he was my baby, so...I think I'm okay again. Thank you.

*hugs*
My buddy Helaina just lost her betta fish and she kept saying how she didn't want to make a big deal out of it because she was afraid people would tell her he was 'just a fish' but no. You both get to have all the feels you need to because this is a creature that you cared about.

Yes, I had the same fear. Then I decided I didn't care and went to work and told people I was upset because of it and to lay off and to my surprise not a single person said anything uncool. I did have trouble walking past the empty spot where his tank was, so I have a new fellow named Figwit now. He's been battling tail rot but he has been blowing up a bubble nest to rival the old guy's house in "Up" now that he's recovering.

That's good, I love it when people surprise you in a good way.
I didn't know betta blew bubble nests, do they just do it for fun?

Male bettas make bubble nests when they are happy as a means of saying, "Hey, any ladies in the area, I can sustain a family because my situation is so perfect, check it out."

I am sorry for your loss of your betta fish, it is a very nice tribute, I hate when my betta fish have died too, I get very close to them. 8 years is a long time I thought they only live to 5 years? I have one that is 4 years old, the others are newer. Perhaps if you get another betta fish you'd feel better there are so many that need homes in the pets stores i hate seeing them in those cups :hmm:

Thank you.
I do have three other bettas in my home, all in large tanks (one getting an upgrade in a week). I actually couldn't handle Byrd's spot being empty so I brought home a new one, Figwit, two days after Byrd passed.
The lifespan estimates I've seen for bettas varies from place to place. I've seen people report anywhere between 2 to 10 years, and sometimes more. Keep care of your guys. It sounds like they have a loving home, and will have long and happy lives.
